Giving Back With Brixton Soup Kitchen (@brixsoupkitchen)

On Monday 20th of July I (NBJ) and several other fantastic ladies, spent the day volunteering over at Brixton Soup Kitchen... Having never volunteered at a soup kitchen before, I had no idea what to expect.

Well tbh, the idea I had could definitely have been straight out of a Tyler Perry movie, so cliche.

It was nothing short of amazing, Solomon (of Brixton Soup Kitchen) opened up the doors to us, and let us run amok in the kitchen. We cooked, cleaned, and served the days guests. All whilst, listening to Solomons motivational and inspiring story and sharing stories of our own.

But don't just take my word for it... check out what some of the girls had to say.

I had a great time at the Soup kitchen! I didn’t expect to enjoy helping to cook for others as much as I did but it was very nice especially working together as a team to serve everyone. I also enjoyed the banter between us sisters and just generally feeling like I am making a difference.
It’s always good to come out of your comfort zone and to continue pushing yourself after Ramadan, to keep striving in charitable projects for the sake of Allah. May Allah accept our efforts. Ameen.

It’s hard to sum up my experience at the soup kitchen into words because it’s more a range of emotions I felt. First and foremost, I thank Allah for guiding us, protecting us and sheltering us without who we would not be in any position to help out. Then I thank Brimah & John for organising such an innovative project; this is something I’ve always wanted to do but never really had the platform to do so. The day was beautiful in so many different ways: working with beloved sisters, meeting the awesome social entrepreneurs behind Brixton Soup Kitchen, spending time and talking with volunteers who consistently dedicate their lives in service to others as well as those that benefit from the kitchen itself. Everyone I met had a story, a reason behind their volunteering and it was both inspiring & humbling to hear them. Today reminded me that there is so much good in this world and small actions can make a big difference. It’s given me a new perspective on charity, NBJ couldn’t have been more true in her words when she said “Charity is more than money, its a way of life”.

It doesn't end there, thanks to you guys not only did we manage to raise enough for the groceries, we were left with a whopping £78!

Money we donated towards getting Solomon and the team a mobile van!!

Honestly we couldn't have done it without you guys, thank you!!! I can't wait to see what we rally together to achieve next, until then subscribe to our mailing list to stay up to date.
